Skulltrail To enter, a name that identifies the new Intel platform for enthusiast systems, we must return the memory at IDF Spring 2007, an event held in Beijing last April. Among the many announcements made by Intel on this occasion to remind Skulltrail platform based on two quad core processors combined with a motherboard that can handle up to a maximum of 4 PCI Express 16x. The period debut of the platform, shown in prototype form, was not yet defined: After 10 months the project has led to the Skulltrail platform that today we look at a preview, waiting for the official launch expected by the end of the first quarter of 2008.

What is the target of a product like this? According to Intel, the user is most passionate, the so-called enthusiast, able to harness the computing power that 8-core processor at 3.2 GHz clock speed, Abin configurations multi-GPU with a minimum of 2 cards working in parallel, can make available. Put another way, Skulltrail is a platform that aims to make available to the home user, the computing power of a workstation graphics-oriented, however, to use video fun.
Re-reading these notes can only go back to the memory of an alternative platform, by AMD in the autumn of 2006, we are talking about Quad FX, a name that identifies the combination of two AMD Athlon 64 FX dual-socket on a motherboard capable of use up to a maximum of 4 PCI Express 16x. Upon submission of that AMD had brought the product to that niche users who use multiple demanding applications in terms of system resources, with a pattern of use that goes to the so-called multitasking megatasking.
first official announcement of Quad FX: June 2006
E 'significant to note that Intel has in fact proposed as an alternative to Skulltrail AMD Quad FX platform, offering for the first 8-core processor against AMD which only four could be made available with Athlon 64 FX solutions. With the debut of the first quad core AMD Phenom expected an evolution from 8-core AMD for this particular platform, identified as the FASN8 (acronym for first AMD silicon next-gen 8-core) and the vicissitudes technological and financial that have characterized the whole of 2007, AMD has in fact led to a suspension of this project, determining at least a temporary end of the Quad FX platforms and their evolutions in the market.

shown to Intel, however, anticipates today the technical and performance characteristics of its solutions Skulltrail to the public, pending an available market of the first systems set up by the partners by the end the first quarter of 2008. Intel Skulltrail platform will offer both OEM customers that their systems directly to the assembly by integrators or end users: you can then purchase card motherboard, processor and memory so as to adapt its system to this platform, benefiting from the availability of 8 Core operating in parallel.
