Linux Standard Base 3.2

Last Tuesday Linux Foundation has announced the upgrading of specific Linux Standard Base (LSB), Now in version 3.2 . LSB is a project that aims to standardize the various distributions Linux existing standards regulating for the libraries, a large number of commands that are to extend the POSIX standard, the hierarchy of the file system, applications and services started at different run levels, and various elements of the X Window System.

The upgrade to the new LSB 3.2 includes support for interpreted languages \u200b\u200bPerl and Python, thus giving developers the certainty that their applications written with these languages \u200b\u200bare able to operate on a large number of Linux distributions. They also introduced new features for print and multimedia , including the adoption of API ALSA sound system . As for libraries, has been promoted the adoption of freedom of Trolltech's Qt 4, replacing the previous version of Qt 3, which has been deprecated.

" Linux Standard Base is meeting the growing demand for independent developers who want to develop applications portable across different Linux distributions ," said Jim Zemlin, executive director of Linux Foundation . " With the inclusion of support for interpreted languages, printing and different specifications, this new version provides everything developers need to transform their independent applications in a portable format through the various distributions .

LSB is currently the standard adopted by several distributions, including Debian, Mandriva, Novell, Red Hat, Ubuntu and Xandros . Specifications, test suites to verify the compatibility of applications and development tools for Linux Standard Base 3.2 is available on the Linux Foundation to address this . The release of version 4 of the LSB is expected before the end of this year.
